National screening programme
In Denmark, we offer free national screening programmes for cervical cancer, breast cancer, and bowel and rectal cancer, as well as for a number of conditions and diseases in pregnant women and newborns.
Screening is an examination for a given disease or condition, which is offered to large sections of the population. The purpose of the screening programmes is to reduce morbidity and mortality by detecting diseases at an early stage in seemingly healthy individuals and identifying those whose risk of having or developing a given condition or disease is so significant that they should receive an offer of further examination or treatment.
The Danish Health Authority continuously assesses and adjusts the content of the existing national screening programmes and processes applications for new screening programmes.
