Evidence in health promotion and disease prevention

28 JAN 2008

Evidence has become a central concept in the prevention of health problems. In recent years, focus has been directed in earnest towards the type and quality of the knowledge that provides the basis for preventive and health promoting interventions. A growing necessity for evidence-based disease prevention and health promotion has been expressed from many sources.

With the adoption of the Danish Health Act, the municipalities and regions in Denmark have taken over responsibility for citizen-oriented – and partly patientoriented – disease prevention and health promotion. Together with the regions, the municipalities must play a part in tasks pertaining to research and development within the field, with the aim of ensuring that preventive health care is carried out with a high level of professionalism. Evidence-basing is a vital aspect of this work.
